Stephen Coonts' Journal

Amadinejad and the gang in Tehran continue to make news.  Now they want to buy, steal and smuggle into Iran enough stuff to built TEN new centrifuge facilities to process uranium into plutonium.  This isn’t ten new centrifuges, but ten new FACTORIES to manufacture LEU, or low enriched uranium.  This process raises the concentration of the U-235 isotope in UF6 from its natural level of .7 percent to 3 to 5 percent.  Doesn’t sound like much, but this process takes about 70 percent of the time and effort necessary to get to the final product, which is HEU, or highly enriched uranium, containing weapons-grade concentrations of over 90 percent U-235.

The goal of ten new factories is probably pie in the sky, considering the amount of money such a committment would require, and the machinery necessary, which would have to be imported despite UN sanctions.  But make no mistake: Iran is absolutely committed to becoming a nuclear-armed power.

  1. Just finished DISCIPLE and found it enthralling. I was shocked that you used the real names of those fanatics who run Iran. Like Ahmeddinajad and Khomeini. Are you not afraid that they may declare a fatwah against you? Would you consider sending Carmellini to countries like India and Pakistan who are also playing with nuclear fire? I have read all your books and your latest is one of the best.

The best of luck to you and a Happy Christmas
